The Wine Route

History

Several archaeological and documentary testimonies attest to the long tradition of the Serranía de Ronda as a land of vines and wines. The nearby archaeological site of the Iberian-Roman city of Acinipo (47-44 B.C.) is good proof of this. Our Wine Route is also home to three Natural Parks (P.N. Sierra de Grazalema, P.N. Sierra de las Nieves and P.N. de los Alcornocales) and around twenty other protected natural areas. The epicentre of the Route is located in the thousand-year-old city of Ronda, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1966 and possessing a rich and diverse historical heritage (Arab Baths, New Bridge over the Tajo, Bullring, Mondragón Palace, etc.) that combines extraordinarily with the landscape of the vineyards. The RVR includes a total of 16 wineries that can be visited. In addition to these, we can enjoy a visit to the Wine Interpretation Centre and the Integral Wine Centre, a space designed for training, interpretation and visitors, and which has made it possible to recover the city’s old 19th century water supply tanks.

Wine

A large part of our uniqueness is due to its particular location at the southernmost latitude of the Mediterranean arc. The geological diversity of our soils, together with the altitude and climatic characteristics make up a biodiverse scenario that develops red, white and rosé wines with a wide range of aromas and great personality. The wines of the Serranía de Ronda are made with the white varieties Chardonnay, Colombard, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Viognier; and the red varieties Romé, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shyrah, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot, Graciano, Malbec, Monastrell and Tintilla de Rota. In addition, the Serranía de Ronda has a rich gastronomic heritage that ranges from traditional and simple recipes to the most exquisite signature cuisine. In this sense, we highlight the production of Iberian pork sausages, the elaboration of artisan cheeses with the indigenous breeds Payoya and Merina Grazalemeña, extra virgin olive oils or pickled table olives. Not forgetting our excellent honeys and chestnuts. Several archaeological and documentary testimonies attest to the long tradition of the Serranía de Ronda as a land of vines and wines.
